The murder of Rohit Negi in Dehradun has entered its third day, but the culprit remain missing.
This case not only raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in the Uttarakhand but has also sparked widespread public anger against the perceived inaction of the district administration.
On Wednesday, a large number of people gathered at the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office, led by Sahaspur MLA Sahdev Singh Pundir. The protesters expressed deep dissatisfaction over the police’s slow response in the investigation and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for Rohit Negi Murder Case MLA Pundir strongly criticized the situation, saying this was not just a murder but a direct attack on the city’s law and order. He urged authorities to prioritize verification of young migrants especially those coming to Dehradun from outside the region as a vital step toward improving urban security.
Rohit Negi’s uncle, speaking in front of cameras, expressed his grief and anger, saying, “Our family’s only light has been extinguished, yet the police are still sitting idle.” Meanwhile, SSP Ajay Singh assured that sensitive areas would be identified and thorough verification processes carried out.
Munna Singh Chauhan, BJP MLA from Vikas Nagar also expressed his outrage. Speaking to the media, he said, “Rohit Negi was trying to resolve a dispute, but this brutal murder highlights serious law and order challenges. There is a need for strict investigation into those living here as paying guests or in hostels, especially outsiders.”
The tragic event occurred on the night of June 2 at Peepal Chowk in Manduwala. According to police reports, motorcycle-riding assailants fired at Rohit Negi, who was sitting in a Bolero vehicle. A bullet struck him directly in the neck. He was rushed to Graphic Era Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police have named Azhar Malik also known as Azhar Tyagi, a resident of Muzaffarnagar as the prime suspect.
The conflict reportedly began when Azhar abused a female friend of Rohit’s acquaintance over the phone. When Rohit intervened and warned Azhar to stop, Azhar threatened him in return. That same night, Azhar allegedly came on a bike and shot Rohit.
Police have registered a case against Azhar Tyagi and an unknown accomplice under relevant legal provisions. Despite cooperation with Uttar Pradesh police, no progress has been made so far. The accused remains at large, and the investigation is stalled. Since the incident, social media has been flooded with criticism of the police for their failure to arrest the suspect. Questions like “Why hasn’t the accused been caught yet?” and “Have criminals become so bold in Dehradun?” are widely discussed, reflecting public fear and frustration.
