Under strict orders from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the Dehradun Police carried out a large-scale operation over the weekend targeting individuals drinking in public spaces.
Dehradun, April 11 – Once known for its peaceful hills and clean air, Dehradun is now facing a different kind of high—public drinking and rising incidents of alcohol-related misbehavior. In response, the city police have launched a strong crackdown, sending out a clear message: the streets are no place for a party.
Under strict orders from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the Dehradun Police carried out a large-scale operation over the weekend targeting individuals drinking in public spaces. As a result, 255 people were detained for consuming alcohol either on the roadside or inside parked vehicles.
All offenders were transported to nearby Dehradun Police Stations in buses arranged specifically for the operation—an initiative locals have started calling the “Booze Shuttle” or “Booze Bus Service.” While the name might sound amusing, the intent behind the action is anything but.
At the police stations, the individuals were questioned and issued stern warnings. They were also fined under relevant sections of the Police Act, resulting in a total penalty collection of ₹80,250.
The drive didn’t just stop with public drinkers. The Dehradun police also caught 12 people driving under the influence, all of whom were arrested on the spot. Their vehicles were immediately seized, reflecting the department’s zero-tolerance approach towards drunk driving.
Speaking on the operation, a police official said, “We are committed to maintaining public order and safety. Drinking in public areas and behind the wheel puts everyone at risk. These actions are necessary to protect the city’s social fabric.”
The Dehradun Police made it clear that this isn’t a one-time initiative. Similar drives will continue across the city in the coming weeks. Officials say the goal is to restore dignity and discipline to public spaces that have increasingly been misused for alcohol consumption.
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns among citizens about the changing atmosphere of Dehradun. Once considered a peaceful hill city with a strong academic and cultural identity, residents say it’s slowly gaining an unwanted reputation due to frequent instances of roadside drinking, loud music, and late-night gatherings.
“I’ve lived here for over two decades, and this kind of behavior was never common,” said Renu Sharma, a local resident in Jakhan. “It’s good to see the police finally taking strong steps. The city belongs to everyone, and it should feel safe and respectful.”
Shopkeepers and families in popular areas like Rajpur Road and Paltan Bazaar have also welcomed the move, citing frequent disturbances caused by people drinking in parked cars or near public spots. Many say they had stopped going out late due to the discomfort caused by such gatherings.
With the city expanding and attracting a growing number of tourists, students, and young professionals, officials say maintaining public order is becoming more challenging—but all the more necessary.
For now, the Dehradun Police seem determined to keep the buzz in the bars and off the streets. And for anyone planning to pop open a bottle in a public place, there might just be a “Booze Bus” waiting to give them a sobering ride to the nearest police station.
As Dehradun continues to grow and evolve, the balance between urban freedom and civic responsibility becomes more crucial than ever. With the Dehradun Police now stepping up their efforts, it’s a wake-up call for citizens to rethink how public spaces are used—and misused. The message is loud and clear: enjoy responsibly, respect the city, or be ready for a ride you won’t forget.
