A tense situation unfolded under the ISBT flyover in Dehradun late night when a man fired a gunshot in the air during a crowd scuffle.
The man, identified as Ayush Rathi from Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh} was later arrested by police for carrying an illegal ”desi katta.”
The incident began around midnight when a boy and girl started arguing near the ISBT flyover. The argument attracted the attention of people nearby, including auto-rickshaw drivers and local bystanders. Many of them stepped in to support the girl and stop the fight.
As the crowd grew and the shouting continued, Ayush Rathi who happened to be nearby, also came forward. According to police, Ayush said he went to the scene thinking he could help settle the situation. However, the people present misunderstood his role and believed he was a friend or supporter of the boy involved in the argument.
Tension quickly rose, and some members of the crowd started arguing and pushing Ayush. Feeling surrounded and threatened, he pulled out a small illegal pistol and fired a shot into the air. This caused panic at the scene, and people started running in different directions.
The police at ISBT outpost received information about the gunshot and reached the location quickly. They found Ayush being beaten by a few people and immediately intervened. He was taken into custody and brought to the police post. Upon searching him, a desi katta was recovered.
After medical checks, officials confirmed that no one was injured by the bullet. However, a few people had minor injuries due to the crowd’s rush and panic after the shot was fired. Police said there was no evidence that Ayush tried to harass the girl or harm anyone directly.
During questioning, Ayush told police that he only fired in the air to protect himself, as the crowd was turning against him. He said he had no connection to the boy or girl involved in the argument and had only tried to help.
Despite this, the police arrested Ayush for possessing and using an illegal firearm. He now faces legal charges under arms laws. Investigators are still collecting more details about the incident and have asked anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
This event has raised concerns about public safety and the illegal use of firearms in crowded areas like ISBT. It also highlights the risk of people taking action without knowing the full situation. What started as a simple argument between two people ended with gunfire and panic putting many at risk.
Police said the situation could have turned dangerous if the bullet had hit someone. Thankfully, it was only a warning shot in the air, and no lives were lost. The case is now being investigated further, and officials are checking if Ayush has any criminal history or past involvement in similar matters.
Authorities have once again reminded people not to carry weapons illegally and not to take matters into their own hands in public places. They have also urged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions during such conflicts, as misunderstandings can lead to serious consequences.
