A major blaze broke out near the popular Maggi Point along the Mussoorie-Dehradun road, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and alarming nearby residents and tourists. The fire quickly spread through the dry forest, threatening nearby shops, property, and wildlife.
Local residents near Maggi Point promptly informed the Mussoorie Forest Division, Fire Services, and Police. All concerned departments responded swiftly and launched a coordinated firefighting operation. Firefighters, forest staff, and volunteers worked tirelessly for nearly two hours to bring the raging fire under control.
Though the fire has been extinguished, it caused significant damage to the forest area, destroying valuable flora and fauna near Maggi Point. Officials from the Mussoorie Forest Division have begun investigating the incident. Initial observations suggest that the fire may have been sparked due to illegal land plotting activity in the area—an issue that has been raising concern among environmentalists for some time.
Amit Kumar, a local shopkeeper near the site, recounted the moment he realized something was wrong. “As I opened my shop early in the morning, I saw smoke billowing from the forest. Within minutes, flames were visible, and the fire was spreading rapidly. We immediately called the authorities, and everyone pitched in to help control the situation,” he said.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter monitoring and preventive measures during the fire season. Forest officials have urged locals and tourists to remain alert, avoid activities that could trigger fires, and report any suspicious behavior immediately. With rising temperatures and dry conditions, authorities fear more such incidents may occur if timely precautions are not taken.
