In Nainital

Sexual Assault Case of A Minor Leads To Communal Tensions In Nainital.

The quiet hill town of Nainital is very tense right now because a young girl was reportedly sexually assaulted.

Police have caught a 75-year-old man about this. People say he tricked a young student into his car on April 12th and raped her. The girl told her sister, and then her family went to the police on April 30th to complain.

When people in the town heard about this, many Hindu groups and locals started to protest. That night, angry people damaged shops in the Gari Parav area. Many of these shops belong to Muslim people. Some people also threw stones and fought in the streets. Police and other officials came to try and calm things down.

The next morning, May 1st, even more angry people went out on the streets. Thousands marched to the Commissioner’s office, asking for the man to be punished severely. They gave a letter about this. But the crowd was still angry and went back to the police station, demanding that the police give the man to them.

Because things are so tense, all the shops from Mallital to Tallital are closed. Tourists are having trouble finding food, and places like Nainital Lake are empty. When police saw many people gathering near a mosque, they sent more police there.

People say Nainital hasn’t been like this since the lockdowns. Almost everyone in Nainital is out on the streets today. Many police and officials are there. Because people gathered near the mosque by the police station, the police are watching closely. Hindu groups and local people are very angry.

The closed shops are also hurting tourists. Many can’t find food and drinks. Also, because people are angry, many are staying inside. Nainital Lake looks very quiet.

The top police officer is there but important officials like the main district officer and the top police officer haven’t come yet. This is making people even angrier.

The government is asking everyone to stay calm and says they will look into the case fairly. They have also put a rule in place that says four or more people can’t gather together, and they warn that anyone spreading rumors will be punished.
