Jeevan Chandra Joshi is a 65-year-old artist from Kathghariya in Haldwani Uttarakhand who has turned life’s challenges into a powerful source of inspiration.
Affected by polio since childhood which limited his mobility Jeevan Chandra Joshi chose to rise above the odds and dedicated his life to art using a rare and intricate technique involving pine bark known locally as baguette which most people consider waste.
For nearly thirty years Joshi has been transforming this discarded bark into beautiful artworks that reflect the deep cultural roots of Uttarakhand. His creations feature traditional folk instruments ancient hill temples and symbols that speak to the soul of the region. His devotion to this craft earned him national recognition and he became the first Indian artist to receive a Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture for his work in pine bark art.
His extraordinary journey was recently highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 122nd episode of Mann Ki Baat. The Prime Minister praised Joshi for his resilience creativity and ability to breathe new life into something often thrown away.
Following the mention in Mann Ki Baat Nainital MP and former Union Minister Ajay Bhatt visited Joshi’s art centre to personally appreciate his work and assured him of government support to promote and preserve this unique art form.
Jeevan Chandra Joshi’s story is more than the journey of an artist. It is a powerful reminder that with dedication and passion even the most difficult circumstances can be turned into something meaningful and impactful.
