Nainital Lake is facing a severe water crisis as its water level drops to the lowest in five years. Known for its natural beauty, the lake is now showing signs of drying up due to a sharp decline in rainfall and snowfall. Since October, the region has received 90% less precipitation than usual, leading to the formation of small islands of sediment in the lake. Experts warn that if this situation continues, Nainital and nearby areas could face serious water shortages in the coming months.
The lack of rain has significantly impacted the lake’s water level, which has been decreasing over the years. According to the irrigation department, the water level in March has been as follows:
- 6 feet 10 inches in 2020,
- 5 feet 4 inches in 2021,
- 7 feet 9 inches in 2022,
- 4 feet 8 inches in 2023,
- 4 feet 9 inches in 2024,
and now at 4 feet 7 inches in 2025.
This situation is not only affecting the lake but also creating problems for local farmers in the surrounding hilly regions. With little rainfall, many areas are experiencing drought-like conditions, making agriculture increasingly difficult.
Experts point to climate change as a major reason for the declining water levels. Additionally, the rising population and increasing number of tourists in Nainital are putting further pressure on water resources. To address this crisis, there is an urgent need for rainwater harvesting and better water management. Authorities must also develop a long-term plan to ensure the town’s water security.
“The water level in Nainital Lake this March is the lowest in the last four years,” said Bijendra Singh, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department. If immediate steps are not taken, both local residents and tourists could face a severe water shortage in the near future.
