Rare Gucchi Mushroom cultivated in Uttarakhand by Indian Engineers

Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand

A significant milestone in Indian agriculture has been achieved, as Naveen Patwal, a BTech graduate from Pauri Garhwal, has successfully cultivated Gucchi mushroom, one of the most expensive mushroom in the world.

Gucchi mushrooms, which are known for their rich medicinal properties, are usually found in regions of China and France. Patwal spent many years on the research and development part before growing them successfully in his polyhouse. Patwal initially faced failures in 2022. After this setback, he restarted his efforts in December 2024, and this time he managed to grow around 100 kg of these mushrooms within three months.”.

The ideal temperature for Gucchi mushrooms is extremely low, which makes their cultivation difficult. However, Patwal’s perseverance resulted in large-scale farming in India. He believes this could provide better employment and economic opportunities in Uttarakhand and can reduce migration from rural areas in search of jobs by providing local employment

The price of these highly valuable Gucchi mushrooms ranges from ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 per kilogram in India. Patwal credits his wife, an IIT alumna, and his maternal uncle for their support throughout his journey.

His achievement has been praised by the Horticulture Department of Pauri Garhwal, which has also assured assistance in expanding Gucchi mushroom farming in the region. This breakthrough marks a new beginning for Gucchi mushroom cultivation in India, offering great potential for future growth.
