Rudraprayag Battles Deepening Water Crisis as Summer Heat Escalates

As summer tightens its grip on Rudraprayag, a scenic town where the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers meets, is facing an alarming water crisis.

With natural water sources drying up fast, the Jal Sansthan (Water Institute) has been forced to bring in water through tankers just to meet basic needs of Rudraprayag. While townsfolk are managing to get by with tanker supply, the situation in rural areas is far more serious. In many remote villages, people are walking for kilometers—often carrying heavy vessels on their backs—just to fetch water from distant sources.

“Many of our traditional water points are either completely dry or the water quality has gone bad,” said Anish Pillai, Executive Engineer at Jal Sansthan. “We’re also seeing rising complaints of muddy or discolored water, which isn’t safe for drinking.”

What’s making things worse is the wave of forest fires sweeping across the region. These fires not only damage the ecosystem but also affect underground and surface water sources, accelerating their depletion. With little to no rainfall in recent weeks and temperatures climbing steadily, hopes of immediate relief seem distant.

Local authorities are urging people to conserve water as much as possible and are trying to ramp up supply in affected areas. But for many villagers, the crisis feels all too real, and the road ahead looks tough unless the weather takes a turn or long-term water solutions are put in place.

The water shortage in Rudraprayag is not just a seasonal inconvenience—it’s a growing sign of how climate change, deforestation, and infrastructure gaps are coming together to create a deep-rooted problem that needs urgent attention.
