Save Khalanga Forest: Encroachment Row Sparks Outcry in Dehradun

A case of forest encroachment has surfaced in Dehradun’s Khalanga region near Nalapani, where around 40 bighas of protected forest land have reportedly been fenced off and a large gate installed.

The Khalanga area, known for its ancient trees and rich biodiversity is now at the center of public anger and official scrutiny after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

In the video, a woman is seen questioning men at the site on Khalanga region where one claims to be a contractor working for a Rishikesh resident. He says the land is being developed for a private camping venture. The visuals clearly show the gate and fencing erected inside what locals claim is protected forest land.

The incident has triggered protests by local organizations. Mohit Dimri (General Secretary of the Uttarakhand Swabhiman Morcha) reached the site with supporters and alleged that land mafias are trying to take over forest land under the guise of private ownership. “Khalanga is home to 4,000 to 5,000-year-old trees. This kind of intrusion is not only illegal but threatens our natural heritage,” Dimri said.

Following the public outcry, the Forest Department acted swiftly. Mussoorie DFO Amit Kanwar confirmed that although the land appears to be privately owned in records, it has naturally regenerated into forest over the years and now falls under the Forest Conservation Act. Construction work has been stopped, and a joint investigation with the Revenue Department is ongoing.

The woman in the viral video questioned the legality of the land ownership and said action came only after public pressure. “Why didn’t the department act earlier?” she asked.

Officials have removed the gate and are assessing environmental damage. Strict action will be taken if forest laws have been violated, Kanwar added.
