UTTARKASHI | April 16: Uttarkashi witnessed a rare and emotional moment as two long-awaited milestones came together. The breakthrough of newly rebuilt temple of Baba Baukhnag was consecrated at its original site and alongside it, the Silkyara Tunnel on the Yamunotri Highway was achieved.
As engineers connected the final stretch of the 4.5 kilometer Silkyara tunnel, a spiritual celebration unfolded outside. Locals gathered to witness the return of their beloved deity to the place where his shrine once stood, before being damaged during construction.
Back in November 2023, the Silkyara tunnel collapse had trapped 41 workers underground for 17 days. Many locals believed the tragedy was linked to the disturbance of Baba Baukhnag’s temple. When all workers were rescued safely, it was seen by many as a divine act. The faith in the deity grew stronger, and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami promised that the temple would be rebuilt exactly where it had stood.
That promise was fulfilled today. The temple was consecrated with full rituals and local participation. The event was attended by CM Dhami, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Minister of State Ajay Tamta, and several officials, alongside local priests and villagers. The emotional weight of the occasion was felt by everyone present.
While the tunnel will take nearly a year more to be equipped with safety features and infrastructure before opening for regular traffic, today’s breakthrough is about more than construction. It reflects the spirit of the region, where belief and progress move hand in hand.
As the tunnel opens to light on both ends, and Baba Baukhnag returns to bless the land, Uttarkashi celebrates not just development, but devotion.
