Uttarakhand Struggles with Traffic Jams Ahead of Char Dham Yatra

With the Char Dham Yatra just around the corner and summer tourism picking up, Uttarakhand is once again stuck in a mess we’ve seen too many times before.

Massive traffic jams have already started crippling movement across large parts of the Uttarakhand. Despite all the lessons from past seasons, here we are again—endless lines of vehicles, stranded pilgrims, frustrated locals, and an administration that looks unprepared.

This time, though, the situation feels like it could get much worse. There’s talk of record-breaking tourist numbers and rising temperatures that’ll push both people and infrastructure of Uttarakhand to their limits. The signs of trouble are already showing. But somehow, there still isn’t any real urgency from the people in charge.

Every year, the authorities talk big—about detailed plans and tight preparations. But the same problems keep coming back. Traffic mismanagement, bottlenecks, poor crowd control—none of it really improves. It’s not that the government doesn’t know what’s coming. It’s that they don’t act on it. Instead of planning ahead, they wait for things to go wrong and then scramble to fix them.

The police are trying, but they’re clearly understaffed. And while their efforts deserve credit, it’s obvious they need more help. Why hasn’t the government come up with better ideas by now? Just for this three-month peak season, why not train and employ local youth to help with traffic and crowd control? It would lighten the load on the police and give people some short-term jobs. It’s doable. It just needs some intent.

We need to stop accepting this chaos as normal. It’s not just a traffic issue—it reflects deeper problems in how things are run. Uttarakhand deserves better. The people living here deserve better. And the lakhs of pilgrims who come with faith in their hearts deserve a smoother, safer journey.

The Char Dham Yatra is more than a spiritual trip, it’s also a mirror showing how well we govern. And right now, that reflection isn’t something to be proud of!
