As the countdown to WAVES Summit 2025 begins, the top five winners of the TruthTell Hackathon have just been announced. This global tech challenge—organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting along with the India Cellular and Electronics Association—aims to tackle the growing problem of misinformation and fake media using AI tools.
Among the winners is Team Alchemist, a group of students from a university in Dehradun, who built a tool called Veristream. Their project combines live broadcast fact-checking, LangChain-based natural language processing, and GIS data to spot and track misinformation in real-time.
Team member Karthik Gupta said they started working on the idea back in October, with a clear goal in mind—to help people tell what’s true and what’s not. “Fake news is one of the most dangerous challenges of our time,” he said. “One false report can ruin a life—or stop something important from happening. Veristream helps find where misinformation is coming from and shares the real story with the public. We’re hoping to do well at the summit too.”
The final round of the hackathon took place at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, where 25 teams presented their AI-driven solutions to a panel of experts. The top five teams shared a prize pool of Rs 10 lakh.
All winning projects, including Veristream, will now be showcased at WAVES 2025, which will be held in Mumbai from May 1 to 4. For the students from Dehradun, it’s a proud moment—and a big step onto the global tech stage.
