A tragic road accident occurred near the Dhulkot Dat Kali Temple in Dehradun (Uttarakhand), resulting in one fatality and two injuries.
According to initial reports, the incident took place in the forested area of Dhulkot (close to Vikasnagar) when two vehicles collided head-on, leading to severe damage to both vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said that the accident happened due to high speed. The vehicles were coming from opposite directions and crashed directly into each other. The impact was so intense that both vehicles were badly damaged and left mangled. For a while, traffic of Dhulkot was affected as rescue operations were carried out on the narrow road passing through the forest.
Local police and emergency services of Dhulkot arrived at the scene shortly after the accident was reported. They found one young man had died on the spot due to the force of the collision. Two other people who were injured were immediately rushed to Graphic Era Hospital in Dehradun. Doctors there confirmed that the injured were undergoing treatment and being closely monitored.
This is not the first such incident reported from this stretch of road. The Dhulkot area, especially near Dat Kali Temple (Dhulkot) has been the site of multiple fatal accidents in recent years. In May 2024, a similar crash occurred in the same Dhulkot area when a two-wheeler collided with a truck late at night, resulting in two deaths and one injury. After that accident, officials from the Transport Department had visited the site and expressed concerns over safety conditions on this route.
Following the 2024 incident of Dhulkot the Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun, Shailesh Tiwari had conducted an inspection and recommended a series of safety measures. These included the installation of rumble strips, reflective cat’s eyes, speed limit boards, warning signs, and cluster lights before sharp turns. Some of these suggestions were sent to the Road Safety Committee, but it is unclear how many were fully implemented.
The latest accident once again brings the focus back to the safety of this road and the need for strict monitoring of traffic rules. The forested terrain, sharp turns and limited visibility make this route particularly dangerous, especially when vehicles are speeding.
Graphic Era Hospital, where the injured were taken has a well-equipped emergency unit that handles serious road accident cases. Staff at the hospital confirmed that both injured individuals were receiving necessary care and would be under observation for the next 24 to 48 hours.
Dehradun district has seen a steady rise in road accidents over the past few years. In 2024 alone, the district recorded 435 road accident cases, up from 373 in 2023. Fatalities also rose, with 158 deaths reported in 2024 compared to 151 the previous year. The number of people injured in road accidents also increased, from 322 in 2023 to 376 in 2024. These figures make Dehradun the district with the highest number of accidents in Uttarakhand.
At the state level, Uttarakhand reported 1,448 accidents in 2024, showing a continuing upward trend. Authorities have identified 176 accident-prone black spots in the state, and Dehradun has the highest number with 56 such locations. The Dhulkot-Vikasnagar road, especially near Dat Kali Temple, is considered one of these high-risk stretches.
Traffic police and the Transport Department have repeatedly issued warnings and imposed fines for speeding, which can range from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 depending on the type of vehicle and severity of the violation. Yet, the rate of accidents shows that stricter enforcement and more public awareness campaigns are still needed.
Following the June 20 accident, an official investigation has been launched. Police are collecting evidence, taking eyewitness accounts, and inspecting the damaged vehicles to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that speeding was the most likely reason, but further details will be revealed once the inquiry is complete.
This unfortunate incident is another painful reminder of the importance of road safety. The loss of a young life and injuries to two others is not just a family tragedy but also a community concern. As the region continues to grow and traffic increases, there is an urgent need to improve road infrastructure, enforce traffic laws more strictly, and raise public awareness about responsible driving.
Local residents and regular commuters on the Vikasnagar route have also called for immediate safety upgrades in the area. These include better lighting, reflective road signs, and stricter speed monitoring, especially at known accident-prone zones like the one near Dat Kali Temple.
Until concrete steps are taken, the risks will continue. This accident should serve as a wake-up call for all drivers, authorities, and policy-makers to treat road safety with the seriousness it deserves.
